To reduce emissions, California Air Resources Board prohibits the sale of new gas-powered, small off-road engines (SORE) used in lawn and garden equipment. Small off-road engines (SORE) are spark-ignition engines with rated power at or below 25 horsepower.
Typical equipment types that use SORE include turf renovation equipment such as zero turn mowers, sod cutters, aerators, power rakes, and dethatchers.
